member's stories:

My name is Zak and I would like to share my story with you.

Before becoming a member of Stepping Stone Clubhouse, I was living a lonely, isolated existence.  Mental health challenges and negative life experiences had brought me to a very low point.

I was introduced to “Steps” by a support worker from another organization that only provided short-term assistance.  I was looking for a place that would be able to help me on a more permanent basis.  Steppingstone definitely ticked that box.   When I heard that Steps had been around for 26 years, in the same location, and some participants had been members for the whole time, I had to check it out.

During my first visit I was made so welcome that I made the decision to return.  That was one of the best decisions of my life.  I spent time in Hospo and CAT, but within a short time I found my niche in RAM.  I have been able to utilize my abilities by taking part in the Work Ordered Day in areas that I feel most comfortable.  I have also been able to extend myself by working with staff and other members who have skill sets in areas I don’t.  In this way I have learned and grown in confidence and self-esteem.

I have taken part in two Transitional Employment opportunities, which never could have happened without the encouragement and assistance of the staff and members of Steps.  I am regularly a volunteer member driver, which allows me to feel like an essential part of the Clubhouse.  I conduct tours for potential new members which I see as an opportunity to describe how Steppingstone has been so beneficial for me.

Four years later and I am loving Stepping Stone Clubhouse.  Steps has provided me with a home away from home and a community to belong to.  I have found a place where I feel wanted, needed and useful.  I have grown as a person.  I am more confident and self-assured, motivated to attempt things that, once, I wouldn’t have thought possible.  I love this place.
