A Clubhouse on the Northside of Brisbane has been a dream for Stepping Stone for over a decade, and this year we are making it a reality.

As the only Clubhouse in Brisbane, members come from the whole of the Brisbane region, as well as adjacent catchments.  29% of Stepping Stone membership currently live in northern suburbs. Only one fifth of this 29% attended the current Clubhouse located on the southside more than 10hrs last calendar year. Northside members have informed us that they would like to participate more consistently, however, the distance to travel is the main barrier.

Membership will consist of existing Northside residing and new members. Like Stepping Stone, membership is voluntary, without time limits, and open to anyone with a mental illness. The Northside Clubhouse aims to support any person living on the north side of Brisbane and will still be accepting of residents outside of the region.

How was a decision made where to locate the Clubhouse?

A business consultant conducted an analysis of current services on the northside and identified gaps in this area. The location also needed to be close to public transport and employment opportunities. Chermside is such a vibrant hub, and we can’t wait to link in with local businesses and services.

Were there any challenges?

The biggest challenge was securing recurring funding to establish the northside clubhouse. Earlier this year we received the exciting news that QLD Health will provide funding for us to begin this journey.

How is this new Clubhouse beneficial for the community as well as for Stepping Stone as a whole?

It will provide a sense of community, belonging and increase fulfillment for people with mental health concerns who are dedicated to rebuilding their lives in a non-clinical, psychosocial environment. This has been proven to not only positively impact members’ lives but also reduce the need for clinical supports including hospitalisation. As Stepping Stone focuses on recovery, the individual along with their family and the whole community benefits as our members regain confidence, re-enter the workforce and actively participate in the local community. We are really looking forward to connecting with local businesses regarding employment opportunities for our members.

Will the same programs be offered at the new Clubhouse (e.g. work ordered day, HALP) or will there be anything new and different?

We will be providing similar programs as we establish our services together with members, as we grow. Work ordered day is the primary focus where members and staff work side by side to facilitate the daily tasks of running the clubhouse. Daily lunch is also an important activity as we create the menu, plan and source the ingredients, cook the meal fresh and serve each day so the whole clubhouse can share a meal and conversation together.

We will be starting our HALP (Healthy Active Lifestyle Program) slowly with lunchtime options such as walks, meditation sessions and swimming. Then building our program to include exercise in our afterhours activities on weeknights and weekends. Social recreation is also an important program as we know how imperative social activities out in the community are for building friendships and feeling connected.

How have you seen lives transformed after becoming a member of Stepping Stone?

I have watched members progress with their health and wellbeing, social, employment and education goals and build strong friendships and bonds to their local communities which is life changing. Belonging to a community that is non judgemental, supportive and focuses on people’s strengths absolutely transforms members lives in every way as they gain confidence and stamina in work, social and life skills.
