President's Report

This year Stepping Stone Clubhouse had a big milestone to celebrate – 30 years of being a community of people dedicated to each other’s recovery. September saw a number of celebrations, ending with a big party attended by many of our current and previous members, staff and supporters

Stepping Stone North celebrated one year in March and has gone from strength to strength working with new members, engaging with the Northside community and businesses and hosting many meetings and events.

Stepping Stone ends the year in a good financial position, even with investment into growth which will need to continue as we fully establish Stepping Stone North.  Recent NDIS reforms have narrowed access to psychosocial supports, impacting members with NDIS funding and contributing to a decline in revenue, further impacted by the difficult decision to phase out Support Coordination following a comprehensive review of its financial sustainability.

From a Governance perspective, the 2024 AGM saw some changes to the Constitution to increase the number of Management Committee Members, ensuring that we could have member representation from both Coorparoo and North Clubhouses. We now have three amazing Clubhouse members on the Management Committee, which ensures that we are making strategic decisions informed by our members, and with the insight of lived experience.

Stepping Stone is often described as welcoming to everyone, and it’s our people that create that culture - our members, staff and supporters. We are who we are because of you all, and I want to thank each and everyone of you for the important role you play in creating pathways to better mental health. !

CEO's Report

This year marks the first anniversary of Stepping Stone North, and what a remarkable year it has been, one defined by growth, learning, and the strengthening of a vibrant, inclusive community.

TWhen we opened our doors in March 2024, our vision was clear: to create a welcoming, empowering environment for people living with mental ill-health in Brisbane’s northern suburbs. One year on, we are proud to reflect on the profound impact this new Clubhouse has already made.

From the outset, Stepping Stone North embraced the Clubhouse Model, where members and staff work side by side in all aspects of daily operations. This collaborative approach has fostered a deep sense of belonging and purpose, laying the foundation for everything we’ve achieved. Over the past year, we’ve seen steady growth in membership, with many new members discovering the hope, connection, and opportunity that a Clubhouse uniquely provides.

Our commitment to inclusion, recovery, and community continues to deepen. A significant milestone this year was the launch of our first Reflective Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), a powerful step in our journey toward reconciliation. Through this RAP, we affirm our commitment to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment where the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are recognised, respected, and celebrated.

Since developing our RAP, I’ve taken every opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect. One of the most profound realisations has been the beautiful alignment between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander worldviews and the Clubhouse philosophy. Wellbeing, in Indigenous cultures, is grounded in connection—to Country, kin, culture, and spirit. Healing is collective, intergenerational, and deeply relational. These values resonate strongly with the Clubhouse Model, which prioritises relationships, shared responsibility, and community-led recovery.

Clubhouses offer a place of safety and rhythm—spaces where members find meaning through relationships rather than diagnoses. Similarly, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures emphasise kinship, collective identity, and spiritual connection to land. While secular, Clubhouses often become spiritual anchors for members—places of renewal, ritual, and belonging.

By aligning our RAP with the Clubhouse Model, we are strengthening Stepping Stone’s role as a place of welcome, empowerment, and healing for all members—with reconciliation embedded at the heart of our practice.

I invite you to explore this Annual Report, which celebrates not only the achievements of Stepping Stone North’s inaugural year and the launch of our RAP, but also the everyday moments of connection, growth, and leadership that define our community. Above all, it honours our members—their courage, contributions, and collective spirit.

Thank you to our Management Committee, members, and staff for your unwavering commitment and dedication. Together, we are building something truly transformative.

Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc

Reconciliation Action Plan

Our RAP journey began when developing our Strategic Plan 2024-2027,  identifying a commitment for a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). In line with Reconciliation Australia’s guidelines, we established a RAP Working Group consisting of members and staff of Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc.

The group has driven reconciliation efforts, ensuring reconciliation is embedded in our daily operations, building cultural competency, and creating opportunities to connect meaningfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations. We acknowledge both the historic and ongoing systemic impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Our Reflect RAP marks a pivotal step in our journey towards taking action in reconciling these impacts at Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc.

In 2025, Stepping Stone proudly launched our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), a milestone that reflects our commitment to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The RAP launch brought together members, staff, Management Committee and community partners to celebrate our journey and set a clear vision for reconciliation within our community.

Dana:

The RAP launch was a point of pride for the RAP working group and myself. We had a great time prior to the launch organising menus, getting in touch with local Turrbal elders to do a Welcome to Country, and stepping up the Reconciliation vibes around the clubhouse.

During the launch, we enjoyed some cupcakes with strawberry gum and Geraldton wax icing, our famous brownies, and delicious lemon myrtle tea.  Aunty Maroochy, Turrbal Elder and song woman, welcomed us all with her amazing voice and poetry, and inspired us with her story.

A Q and A around building our RAP was held and we had the opportunity to speak about our experiences, our love and support of Reconciliation, and an open forum where we answered any and all questions about the process. We ended the RAP launch with a group photo and wrapped it all up.

Mo:

I reached out to many community organisations to invite them to our RAP launch. I also spoke on the panel and shared my experience working in the RAP group. My favourite part of the launch was inviting Aunty Maroochy. Her speech touched my heart, and brought tears to my eyes. The RAP launch was a true success for our community. I love attending RAP meetings and events, and this year I was invited to take part in the second RAP walk. It was another success, and one of our new members attended as well. I feel that most members and staff are now fully aware of our RAP mission and goals.

Stella

This was such a proud moment – to hear the RAP team share the incredibly hard work that brought us here: our successes and achievements, as well as our challenges and learnings. The RAP launch gave our team the chance to share with the wider community the consistent, genuine passion that forged the way forward in creating our RAP. This passion is fostering changes that strengthen Stepping Stone’s culture, ensuring we actively remain and maintain a welcoming, supportive, and culturally safe space for both current and future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As we move forward, we remain committed to listening, learning, and acting with integrity. Our Reflect RAP is not an endpoint—it is a living commitment to reconciliation, one that will continue to evolve through courageous conversations, meaningful partnerships, and sustained action. Together, we will keep walking the path of reconciliation, ensuring that Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc remains a place of belonging, healing, and hope for all.

How Stepping Stone North Brought the Reconciliation Action Plan To Life

When Stepping Stone North (SSN) first opened in Chermside, we immediately became involved in Stepping Stone Inc’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The first step was to bring together our own RAP working group.

Some of the earliest meetings were held sitting under the gum trees in 7th Brigade Park as we reviewed and gave our input into the design of the RAP document.  This included the cover of Our RAP document, as well as Our Business, Our Reflect RAP, Our Partnerships and Current Activities sections of the document.

We began by identifying and reaching out to local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations such as Kurbingui,  Cultural Liaison Officers (CLO) and ATSICHS.  We also networked with the Brisbane North Family Collective group and Yarn Up meetings held at PCYC Zillmere, and gave a presentation at ATSICHS in the spirit of building connections.

We were very honoured to have local Brisbane Northside Elder Uncle Alex to Welcome everyone to Country at our Official Clubhouse Opening on the 16 July 2024. Uncle Alex told us stories about our surrounding rivers and land. His wealth of knowledge gave us a good insight into the land of Meanjin (Brisbane).

NAIDOC week July '24: Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud! - Stepping Stone North attended an event at Koobara Kindy in Taigum to connect with the surrounding community and join the celebrations.

RAP launch at Stepping Stone Clubhouse (April ‘25) – Stepping Stone North prepared lemon myrtle tea (bags) and planned and participated in the panel discussions at the event. It was wonderful for both clubhouses to come together in support of our strong commitment to reconciliation.

For National Reconciliation Week 2025, Stepping Stone North attended an event at Teralba Park, Everton Park hosted by The Teralba Park Stolen Generations Support Group Inc. Stepping Stone North learned about this year’s theme, 'Bridging Now to Next' emphasising the connection between generations.

We shared resources and information in our Clubhouse so we could learn and build our capacity to deliver our own individual Acknowledgements of Country in a genuine and meaningful way.

Advancing Evidence and Sector Impact

This year marked the fourth cycle of data collection for our annual evaluation of our model’s impacts for members. The evaluation project, originally funded by Queensland Health and supported by the Queensland Mental Health Commission and the University of Queensland, culminated in the publication of the 2024 evaluation report. In January 2025, a peer-reviewed article on the project and its impact was published in the Community Mental Health Journal. This research represents a national milestone as the first formal evaluation of a Clubhouse in the Australian context.

The findings were clear. Existing members, compared to newer members, reported greater satisfaction with their quality of life and higher recovery progress scores. They also experienced stronger social connectedness, better employment outcomes, and were less likely to be hospitalised for their mental health. Within 3–6 months of follow-up, new members were also found to experience increased social connectedness and reduced hospitalisations.

The evaluators found that every member interviewed could describe some way that Stepping Stone had improved their lives. For some, it was life-changing; for others, it was life-saving.

In 2024, the evaluation tools were refined to provide deeper insights into members’ experiences. This included the introduction of a new measure to explore the Clubhouse’s impact on suicidality, which evidenced that existing members experienced greater control over suicidal thoughts.

Our evaluation findings were also presented at the TheMHS Conferences in 2024 and 2025, as well as at the Queensland Alliance for Mental Health Conference in 2025. Across these forums, we highlighted the broader implications for the mental health sector—particularly the importance of community belonging and mutual support, collaboratively designed and implemented programs, and flexible access to services without time limits.

The next phase of evaluation will explore the longitudinal impacts of the Clubhouse model. This will include a cost-benefit analysis and assessment of return on investment, continuing to strengthen the evidence base for its effectiveness.

Through this ongoing research and knowledge-sharing, we continue to build recognition of the Clubhouse model as a vital component of the mental health service landscape, both within our local context and beyond.

Stepping Stone Goes Global!

In September 2024 a Stepping Stone team was all ready to attend the Clubhouse International World Seminar in Tampa, Florida.  Unfortunately, Hurricane Helene had different plans for us.  Jaimi Rogers and Melanie Sennett flew over 25 hours to be evacuated within hours and luckily Col, Lucy and Christine hadn't yet boarded the flight.  We were grateful that everyone was safe.

Take two - In  May 2025, five members and staff from Stepping Stone Clubhouse and Stepping Stone North set off to Florida, to take part in the rescheduled Clubhouse International World Seminar.

During this trip we had an opportunity to meet approximately 800 Clubhouse members, staff and Board members from more than 300 Clubhouses around the world.  Stepping Stone is highly regarded on the global stage as proven by the number of visitors to our training and accreditation stand, with many people sharing their fond memories and stories of their time training at Stepping Stone.

We all had a number of plenaries and workshops to present to attendees.  These workshops covered topics such as Establishing New Clubhouses, Evaluation Report, Transitional Employment program, How to Keep the Work Order Day vibrant.  All were well received by the audience who were engaged and keen to participate and ask questions.

We had the incredible opportunity to share with the world our Australian culture.  Following Sue and Jacqui’s Opening Plenary (Growing our Worldwide Clubhouse Community), attendees were calling out “G’day Mate” for the entire seminar.  We introduced brave clubhouse members and staff from around the world to taste the Australian delicacy of vegemite on crackers, with mixed reviews but overall, the majority were surprisingly fans.

A highlight was the Gala Dinner on the final night which gave attendees and presenters alike a chance to let their hair down and party Clubhouse style as one big community on the dance floor.

We would like to thank Cisco for their generosity in organising the first annual fundraiser in 2024 that enabled us all to attend. Without their support it simply wouldn't have been possible.

Here is what our crew said about the trip:

“Attending the World Seminar was an incredible experience. I've always admired the work of Clubhouse International, and it was inspiring to connect in person with clubhouses from around the world. After so many Zoom meetings, nothing compares to the power of face-to-face connection. It was an unforgettable week, filled with learning, connection, and inspiration.

I’m bringing home new ideas that I can’t wait to share with the Stepping Stone community. A heartfelt thank you to CISCO for making this possible - this was truly a life-changing experience that I’ll treasure forever.”

Lucy Maloney, Stone Clubhouse

“Without Cisco's support I would not have gained both the professional and personal growth that one could only gain during an International Clubhouse World Seminar at an international location. Not only did I learn so much more about Clubhouse, and how pure Stepping Stone Inc stay to the model, but I also became personally motivated to take ownership of some key areas that will further assist other members and the Clubhouse.

This experience has changed me, causing me to face fears and realise I can rely on myself.  I have become more confident, independent, and have gained a greater sense of self-worth as I achieved and exceeded all of my own expectations.  This can absolutely change a member's life forever and was only possible with Cisco's help.”

Sue Birrell, Stepping Stone North

“We just want to give a massive shoutout to CISCO for making it possible for us to attend the Clubhouse International World Seminar 2025 in Florida!  Because of your amazing support, our Stepping Stone crew got the chance to represent our clubhouse on a global stage.

It was such an eye-opening and inspiring experience—we met people from clubhouses all over the world, shared stories and ideas, and came home with so much to think about and build on.

Without your help, we would’ve missed out on all of it. You helped us stay connected to the global clubhouse community, bring our voices to the table, and keep pushing back against the stigma around mental health. We’re so grateful—thank you for believing in us!”

Joseph Nguyen, Stepping Stone Clubhouse

“As a small clubhouse, we don't often travel and attend conferences on this scale. It is so important to be seen and heard in our International Clubhouse community, and for us to showcase how we opened a second clubhouse was so special.

We were so honored to be able to present and have other clubhouses learn from us and be an example for others.  We are extremely proud of what we have achieved, and it wouldn't have been possible without Cisco and all their supporters at last year's fundraiser!

Imagine what we can achieve with this year's event!”

Jacqui Gillespie, Stepping Stone North

“Attending the Clubhouse International World Seminar was a real eye opener. You soon come to this amazing realisation that a member of a single Clubhouse belongs to a much larger family.

I really enjoyed developing the connection between Stepping Stone and the global Clubhouse Community. I also learned much about strengthening community within the Stepping Stone Clubhouse. Lucy and I facilitated workshops about Transitional Employment where we shared our insights on how to expand and strengthen the TE program which was well-received by Clubhouse colleagues around the world.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would like to thank CISCO for their financial support along with Stepping Stone for making this possible.”

Clubhouse Improvements

When we moved into our clubhouse building in February 2024, it was simply an empty shell. During the summer months, we relied on pedestal fans, and in winter, we layered up to stay warm. Since then, we’ve made significant progress. The clubhouse is now equipped with climate control, automatic sliding doors for accessibility, WIFI, updated internal office furniture, external cafe furniture and external security lighting. We also extend our thanks to Invise for providing our new external security cameras. In addition, our signage is now in place, making it easier for the community to identify our location and connect with us.

Events

Annual General Meeting - 27th November 2024

On 27th November, Stepping Stone North hosted Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking an important milestone for the organisation. The AGM brought together members, staff, Management Committee members, and stakeholders to reflect on achievements, discuss strategic priorities, and celebrate the collective efforts that continue to shape the future of Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc.

 First Christmas Party – 6th December 2024

It was a wonderful evening filled with meaningful conversations, new connections and of course lots of music, dancing, and laughter. We dressed up in our favourite Christmas outfits and partied the afternoon away. We were grateful to enjoy a beautifully presented grazing table, generous pizza donations from Domino’s Chermside, and a delicious selection of desserts shared among all.

First Christmas Day – 25th December 2024

We recognise that Christmas can be a challenging time for many, which made it especially meaningful to host our very first Christmas Day at the clubhouse. It was a warm and welcoming celebration shared with members, family, and friends over a delicious lunch of roast chicken, ham, salads, desserts and of course punch. The Clubhouse came together in the festive spirit to ensure our community had a festive time together.

Press conference from Cameron Dick MP and Bart Mellish MP – January 2025

We were proud to host a press conference at our clubhouse with Bart Mellish MP and Cameron Dick[JG1]  MP, highlighting the work of Stepping Stone North and the Clubhouse model. Key discussions focused on the rising cost of living and the Queensland State Budget—issues that significantly impact our members, especially regarding access to clinical mental health care. We thank both MPs for their engagement and continue to advocate for sustainable support to ensure lasting impact in our community.

Virtual Clubhouse during Cyclone Alfred – March 2024

During Ex Cyclone Alfred, we maintained support, connection and continuity by transitioning our Clubhouse to the virtual space, running meetings and Clubhouse activities with members via Microsoft Teams. This ensured our community remained supported and kept our spirits high during what was a stressful and potentially isolating time. Fortunately, once the cyclone had passed, we were able to return to the clubhouse with no damage—allowing us to resume in-person activities without disruption.

First Open Day – 17th June 2025

This past year has been filled with many exciting firsts at Stepping Stone North, including our very first Open Day held on 17th June 2025. We were thrilled to welcome over 70 visitors who enjoyed guided tours of the clubhouse led by our members, along with a classic sausage sizzle. It was a fantastic opportunity to share our space, connect with the community, and showcase all we have achieved in such a short time while displaying the spirit of Stepping Stone North.

First Birthday Party – 18 March 2025

On 18th March 2025, Stepping Stone North proudly celebrated its first birthday since opening our doors on Brisbane’s northside in March 2024. The event was filled with delicious food, a BBQ, and cake, offering a meaningful moment to reflect on the hard work and community effort that brought us here. In 12months we have gone from opening with a handful of members to reaching over 100 members! It was an uplifting celebration of how far we’ve come, and a joyful start to many more years ahead at 7th Brigade Park, Chermside.

Regular Social Recreation and Camps

In February 2025, we expanded our Social Recreation Program to include every Saturday plus Public Holidays, offering more opportunities for connection beyond Work Ordered Day. Highlights included beach trips, museum visits, bowling, and joining local community events. We also joined overnight camps at Tallebudgera Creek and Bestbrook Farm which were highlights of the year that foster relaxation, exploration, and peer connection in a supportive environment.

Grants

As a not-for-profit organisation, Stepping Stone North relies on grant funding to help us deliver essential services, programs, and improvements for our community. We are grateful to have received generous support through a number of grants this year, including:

  • Accessible Vehicle – Funded by the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, enabling greater independence and inclusion for our members.

  • Security and External Lighting – Supported by the Brisbane City Council Safer Suburbs Grant, enhancing safety around our clubhouse.

  • Healthy  Active Lifestyle Program (HALP) – Tennis – Funded by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, promoting physical activity and social connection.

  • Festive Celebrations – Including our Christmas Party, Christmas Day lunch, and Easter activities, also made possible through the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust.

  • Renovation Planning & Design for the first stage of our renovation dream – Supported by the Lord Mayor’s Better Suburbs Grants – Community Facility Category, helping us plan for our rapid growth.

We sincerely thank these grant providers for their continued support in helping us grow, connect, and thrive as a community.

Community Engagement

Ongoing community engagement remains a vital aspect of our work at the clubhouse. By actively networking and collaborating with local organisations out in the community, we are able to promote the Clubhouse Model and highlight the benefits of membership. As part of this activity, we conduct regular monthly visits to patients at The Prince Charles Hospital mental health wards and to other Metro North teams, helping to build connections and raise awareness within the broader mental health community.

RUOK? Conversation Convoy

We were lucky to have team members of the National RUOK? Conversation Convoy stop in at our little clubhouse and connect with us in June. The compassionate & genuine conversations were flowing as we live and breathe the #RUOK?AnyDay message naturally within our community. We were reminded how it’s so important to check in on each other as you never know who might be struggling. We enjoyed having a delicious afternoon tea and getting to know each other further using conversation starter cards which revealed some funny and special moments.

RAD Highlights

This year, we expanded member opportunities through new Employment and Education initiatives. We secured grants, launched our own social media pages, and developed a vibrant social recreation calendar. Members also expressed their creativity by designing birthday cards, brochures, and signage—building skills and showcasing talent.

Nourish Highlights

We proudly earned a four-star Food Business Licence, underscoring our focus on quality and safety. Members prepared healthy lunches and completed food safety training, while the introduction of our POS system improved the professionalism and convenience of our service.

The garden is a special part of the unit. There’s always something happening whether it’s planting, watering, weeding, tending to the herbs and veggies, turning our compost bin, mulching or checking in on our hard-working worm farm. Every task makes a big difference and together we are doing our part to take care of the environment. Over time, the garden has rewarded our efforts with juicy tomatoes, fresh cucumbers and a delicious range of herbs. Best of all, we love bringing our bountiful harvest straight to the kitchen and onto our plates, using our own homegrown produce in the healthy lunches we share every day.

Milestones

Together, these milestones showcase the growth and evolution of Stepping Stone North, illustrating our commitment to building a supportive and thriving community and creating pathways to better mental health. A year of many firsts, first cake, first walk, first social recreation, first outreach call.

Cisco Fundraising Event

On the 23rd of May, 2024, Stepping Stone Clubhouse members and staff attended the Cisco Event - Trivia for Charity – A Night of Giving – at Cloudland’s Rose Room in Fortitude Valley.

It was a huge success, raising over $35k through ticket sales, raffles, and a silent auction. This raised enough funds to enable several staff and members to attend the Clubhouse international seminar in September 2024, and wouldn’t have been possible without the sponsors who supported Cisco and Stepping Stone Clubhouse in funding the event:

  • Invise

  • Insite

  • Truis

  • Vandalist

  • Rivernet.

On the night we donned our best frocks, put on our dancing shoes, and glammed up for a night of brain-busting trivia, infinite laughs, both happy and sad tears, and new-found connections between like-minded individuals.

Staff and members walked around meeting and greeting attendees and sponsors, selling raffle tickets, and dropping hints for the trivia quiz later that evening. Members, Sian and Dana, made speeches, enthralling the audience and engaging them with their stories, and conveying the positive impact that Stepping Stone Clubhouse has made on their lives since joining. Of all 180+ attendees there, a pin dropping could have been heard during these speeches, their eyes on our speakers in rapt attention.

When all was said and done, the night wouldn’t have been possible without Emma and Hannah from Cisco leading the way, with their dedication and passion to help along with this event. These two wonderful women worked their magic to make this event happen, and we will forever be grateful for their contributions.

With the winners of the trivia, raffles, silent auctions, and lucky door prizes announced, the night wound down to a close, with our staff and members enthusiastically handing out to-go boxes of Stepping Stone Clubhouse’s famous brownies. Many of which didn’t even make it out the door before being eaten by enthusiastic party-goers.
